The day news broke about Oscar Pistorious I was quite astounded by the news mania, but I soon realized that Oscar was a worldwide phenomenon and loved in many countries, for his amazing achievements and unique ability to instil a positive image. The media camped outside his house, the court and even where he was being held in the hope of some flash of the man.

Oscar's media coverage pales in comparison to media coverage of Nelson Mandela. Its to be understood as Nelson Mandela is probably the most renowned name in the world today. The mania is almost predictable and we have seen it before and will no doubt see it again. An interesting question is what would the total cost of media coverage be, since most major networks have entire crews camped outside the hospital 24 hours a day? It is obviously a justifiable cost, but a huge one, nonetheless.

Never underestimate the ignorance of the general public :-).

The process to switch from ID books to the new ID card is set to start in July 2013 and will follow a staggered approach, Deputy Director General for Information Service at the Department of Home Affairs, Sello Mmakau recently told MyBroadband.

Mmakau explained that they have put together a roll-out strategy which the Minister of Home Affairs, Naledi Pandor, and Director General, Mkuseli Apleni, will approve soon.

“In a nutshell, we will start with Cabinet Ministers, Parliamentary members and pensioners, then prioritise those citizens that are turning 16 and have never received an ID before,” Mmakau said.

Citizens with existing ID books will be asked to come to Home Affairs offices during their month of birth to apply for a smart ID card, explained Mmakau.

He reiterated that this strategy is still in draft, and pending the Minister’s approval.

Asked about the process of applying for the new card, Mmakau said that the process for getting a new ID card will be exactly the same as getting the current identity document.

“It is expected that citizens will hand over their green ID when receiving a smart ID card,” Mmakau added.
Apple unveiled a music streaming service called iTunes Radio and new mobile software on Monday, in the biggest re-design of its operating system since the original iPhone was introduced in 2007.

Sounds like quite a major revamp. Apple plans to launch in the fall and the upgrade includes Apple's iTunes Radio, one of the more highly anticipated features of the new iOS 7.

Apple has been talking to record companies for the past year in hopes of getting the service off the ground, seen as crucial to retaining users as music consumption grows alongside smartphone use. It will also come free of ads for customers who subscribe to Match, another Apple music service.

Oh no, more ads :-). I am hoping iTunes gets a major revamp. I really find iTunes to be one of the most unfriendly apps I have had to use, this even after every week it persistently to download an 70-80Mb upgrade.

A sighting in June is a welcome surprise and is sure to see eager whale watchers flocking to view points all along the Garden Route coastal region.

If you haven't seen a whale close up, you certainly have missed one of the great wonders of world. Even from a distance, a whales incredible size is astounding, but a close-up sighting is a humbling experience that simply cannot be described.

Whale watching is a popular past-time in the Garden Route and there are many spots along the Garden Route coast line. There are also quite a few companies offering whale watching boat trips. For a list of activity companies in the Garden Route please see:

I found the news today both encouraging, yet also somehow disturbing.

Our President tried hard to sway international investor opinion and failed dismally, this according to the markets, who had their say, in no uncertain terms. In reality its probably not in what he said, that was the problem, but rather in what he did not say. The local media ruthlessly claimed it was more about what he should have done a long time ago about the mining labour disputes. Well in reality, doomed if you do and doomed if you don't. At least he has come out and said something.

The encouraging thing is that at least now we have some activity and we know which direction its going. Down I know, but finally the grand scale of economies have spoken. Our investors are not happy, that's obvious. Well ok, nor are the mine bosses, labour unions, opposition parties, workers, students as well as the unemployed. Kinda difficult to make anyone happy nowadays, when everyone wants something from you.

At current the rate of decline, we should feel right at home next to our Zimbabwean neighbours, within about 6 months.

Take heart we will all be billionaires very soon :-).

We had a problem with our geyser a short while ago. I thought I would take a chance and phone our bank homeowners insurance guys. I explained the 'symptoms' of our geyser, not really expecting a positive response. What I got was: "This is covered under leaking geyser in your policy. I will get the plumbing company to phone you shortly and make an appointment to come and see you" HUH??? You kidding me, right? A positive AND friendly response? In this day and age? In the Garden Route? Ja right....

Within less than 10 minutes I received a call from the plumbing company. WHAAAAAAAAAT???? Service? Again? My heart

A few minutes before 17h00 that same day we had a brand new geyser installed. Believe it or not.

Thank you Nedbank for your kindness and in the way you responded to my query.
Thank you Speedy's Plumbers for your swift response and amazing service. Your staff were amazing and the way in which they conducted themselves deserves a recommendation. They were brilliant, funny and kind.
