    Telkom Infrastructure photos

Vicbay Siemens DLU 044-889 + DSLAM - located next N2 National Road

    Not very safe

    Denneoord installation

In my humble opinion I reckon this is what these cabinets are from left to Right
    1) Siemens DLU (extension of the Siemens DE5 EWSD exchange)
    2) Street Distribution Cabinet (Blue green) (cable pair connections to Exchange & to subscriber)
    3) UMC1000 & DSLAM (extends Fiber to the Curb)
    4) SA Post Office mailbox (snailmail)

Where's the pigeon-hok ? You know, when 16Gb really needs to get somewhere really fast

Like the green grass on the pavement; looks like you've finally had *some* rain, but not much I recon.

If I have to think that Denneoord box is where I'm connecting to I want to puke. ADSL is a critical business service. What if a drunk oke takes that whole box out? 3G backup FTW.

Hmmm this happened in Wellington Street not too long ago. Most of George along this line was down for more than 2 days as the main feed (fibre as well) along Knysna Road was pretty much ripped out. Fortunately and typical; It happened on a weekend.

Just think of the Vicbay DLU getting wipped out by a vehicle that will takeout the entire 044-889 area as well DSL services,
Charl its very true We had dialup first very costly to PE & Capetown, then we had the local Mweb PoP, CIS & SAIX PoP, then ADSL in the CBD , now its spread to all over George with outlying areas being covered by WiMAX and also the WiSP playing their part.

To setup a WiSP competiting with local ADSL does not make business sense, but catering for farmers and remote communities makes sense, as Telkom Spacestream satellite costs R1700/month.
I remembed taking out Spacestream at a customer in Heidelberg and putting a SAIX 64k line which worked far better than the inflexible Telkom option.
    Cost R2500/month.

Sorry twobombs, we have some light drizzle , but not enough make any real changes, grass looks better than the dry Gauteng winter

This visit will be the touch-n-go to do the much needed grassroot survey. We did that the last time we moved to SA, and it generally proved itself to be a Good Thing(tm).

Java's will be on the house that way, hehe It would be great to meet the GR forum ppl. in person' once again. Also planning a stop @ the Great staff of GR.com HQ.

Charl declared as the events' offcial coffee coordinator :)

I'm sure we'll be able to think and organize something; first thing is to pick up the Permanent Residence Permit at Home Affairs, hope to do that on Thursday, but that could be a bit to steep. I've been informed that already a small crowd will be waiting for us @ george airport at the 7th

No Java to be found at my house, I can promise you that... I only drink Good Coffee (TM). We do however stock some Swiss Crapolla (a.k.a. Ricoffee) for unwanted visitors.

Will see if I can source some decent Java though.

Okay, let's do this: We'll bring in the coffee from Holland then and you do the water and heating part then , okay ?

Will collect some water on this side as well. Should be enough for the coffee if we add Kilos collected water as well.
